US President Biden has called his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for the first time in more than 6 months. However, during that one and a half-hour conversation, they mainly talked about their – complicated – relationship.

This has been done almost entirely over the telephone or the internet for almost 2 years now.

It had been more than six months since the two presidents had spoken, their first phone call being around the Chinese New Year, shortly after Biden took office. According to US sources, Biden took the initiative because lower-level talks on global warming and other thorny issues had failed to produce any breakthroughs.

The main theme of the telephone conversation was Sino-American relations. They have been in the doldrums for several years since Biden’s predecessor Trump unleashed a trade war with China in 2018. Trump also continued to systematically speak about “the Chinese virus” during the corona crisis. Xi pointed out to the Americans that their attitude is the cause of all the problems between the two countries.

Even since Biden took office, there has been no thaw in relations with China. For example, the sanctions and customs duties on Chinese products and vice versa remain in force. In addition, the human rights violations against the Uyghurs and the lack of cooperation from China in the search for the origin of the coronavirus continue to disturb Americans.
