The US has confirmed that it is negotiating for the removal of some of its troops stationed in Germany.
A decision has not yet been taken, the German government was told, a spokeswoman said.
American media reported on Friday that US President Donald Trump wants to remove 9,500 of the approximately 34,500 military personnel stationed in Germany.
Chancellor Angela Merkel called it “unacceptable”.
The reduction should be completed in September. Some of the militaries will be transferred to Poland and other NATO countries.
Trump previously threatened to reduce troops because Washington believes that Germany spends too little on defence.
