SPD Leader Scholz Sworn in as German Chancellor

Olaf Scholz was sworn in as the new Chancellor of Germany on Wednesday afternoon. The Social Democrat succeeds Angela Merkel, who was the head of government of Germany for sixteen years.


Scholz said in his oath that he was putting all his energy into the well-being of the German people.

On Wednesday morning, the nomination of 63-year-old Scholz as Chancellor was already approved by the Bundestag, which was the most important step that still had to be taken.

Furthermore, there are mainly official occasions such as the swearing-in of the ministers and the transfer of tasks from Merkel to Scholz.

Scholz will lead a government of his party SPD, the environmental party, the Greens and the liberal FDP. The parties together have a large majority in parliament.
