Pope Francis went to the Russian embassy in Rome on Friday to express his personal concern about the war in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the neighbouring country.
According to the Vatican, the visit lasted about half an hour. A spokesman declined to say whether the 85-year-old prelate has offered the Russian ambassador to mediate.
It is probably the first time that a pope visits an embassy in times of conflict. Typically, ambassadors are summoned by a senior Vatican official.
