Governor New York Wants Changes in Police Forces

The governor of the US state of New York wants local governments to plan and implement drastic reforms in their police forces by April 1, 2021.

If they don’t, they can be cut on the contribution they get from the state.

Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday that it would sign a decree on this. Reforms should aim at reducing, among other things, the use of force and prejudice.

The reason was the massive protests against racism and police brutality after the death of black American George Floyd when he was arrested in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Earlier, Cuomo announced drastic reforms for the state police. For example, the use of a neck clip by the police is prohibited.

Cuomo signed a law on Friday to make reports of police officers’ behaviour public.
