Denmark and Norway are also not giving AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine to people over 65 for the time being.
The health authorities in the Northern European countries say there is too little information about its effectiveness in the elderly.
Last month, the EU approved AstraZeneca’s third corona vaccine. Since then, health services in several EU countries have advised not to vaccinate the elderly with that drug yet. These include Germany and Sweden.
The head of the Norwegian health service explained at a press conference that only a limited number of elderly people participated in AstraZeneca’s investigation. It would therefore not be entirely clear how effective the drug is in that group.
The same argument was heard in other critical EU countries. The Health Council in the Netherlands will issue an advisory report on the Dutch vaccination strategy on Thursday.
