The five submarine internet cables connecting Vietnam to the rest of the world are all faulty or damaged. These are defects that have been accumulating for a long time. Since November last year, there appeared to be problems with the cables, and at the end of January four of the five cables were not working or working at limited capacity. According to local media, the fifth connection, SMW-3, also shows problems. The latter, a connection to Singapore, was no longer actively used for broadband and internet services and will probably have to be replaced. However, operators tell Vietnamplus that the breakdowns will not significantly impact the country's internet speed. There is no clear explanation for the damage, but no malicious intent is explicitly mentioned.
