Another 1,700 Arrests in Kazakhstan City of Almaty

Nearly 1,700 more people have been arrested in the Kazakh city of Almaty, which has been particularly hard hit by unrest. According to Kazakh media, they were mainly looters and other criminals on the authority of the city council of the metropolis.   The number of arrests across the country was recently estimated at around 10,000. Human rights activists warned that the authoritarian ex-Soviet republic must ensure fair trials.
