Dozens Dead and 50 Missing After Landslide in India

At least 11 people have been killed in a landslide in northeast India. It concerns employees involved in the construction of a railway, who were all buried by the rubble.   Rescue workers are still looking for about 50 missing persons, local media report. An official in Manipur state, where the incident took place, said 25 people had been rescued. Most of the victims were reserve soldiers from the Territorial Army working on the railway project. "The loss of life, including members of our armed forces, is deeply saddened," Governor Biren Singh said on Twitter. The remote northeast of India has been hit by heavy rainfall in recent weeks, causing landslides and flooding. Earlier this year, at least ten people were killed in flooding and landslides caused by unusually heavy rain in v...

India to Start Exporting Coronavirus Vaccines Again This Year

India will resume exports of corona vaccines this year. The Asian country is the largest producer of Covid-19 vaccines worldwide but stopped sharing the resources in April due to the enormous corona outbreak among its own population.   The first doses are sent in October, November or December, while the production capacity is further increased. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya says all vaccines not needed domestically will be exported. India prioritizes delivery to neighbouring countries and countries receiving vaccines through the Covax program. India wants to have its own adult population vaccinated by December. 64 percent of all adults have had their first corona jab. 22 percent are fully vaccinated. The vaccination campaign is getting better and better because more vaccines ar...

Record Contraction of India’s Economy Due to the Corona Crisis

India's economy has contracted the most in the past fiscal year since the country gained independence in 1947, as a result of the corona crisis and the lockdowns against the virus.   In the broken financial year that ended at the end of March, there was a contraction of 7.3 percent for Asia's third economy. In the period between January and March, however, there was a growth of 1.6 percent. But in the previous two quarters there was a contraction, and therefore a recession. That was the first recession since Indian independence. The Indian central bank cut interest rates several times to stimulate the economy, and the government came up with support packages. India is facing a deadly second wave of the coronavirus, although the number of new infections has been slowing ...

WhatsApp Files Lawsuit Against India Over Privacy Law

WhatsApp, Facebook's chat service, has filed a lawsuit in the Delhi Supreme Court over new privacy laws. According to WhatsApp, it infringes the rights of its users.   The case exacerbates the already tense relationship between Silicon Valley companies and the country's government with hundreds of millions of users. The Indian government wants WhatsApp to provide access to secure messages. Indian policy requires messaging apps to disclose the identity of the senders of illegal messages. This forces WhatsApp to decrypt the messages, compromising users' privacy. According to the WhatsApp spokesperson, this is the equivalent of "asking to keep a fingerprint of every message sent". And with that, WhatsApp would undermine users' privacy, the company said. WhatsApp has more than half a...

Indian Corona Variant is Circulating in Belgium

The more contagious Indian variant of the coronavirus has claimed a life in a nursing home in Belgium and is also spreading elsewhere in the country.   The mutant is probably more widespread than expected, says Belgian virologist Johan Neyts. The new variant, which is rife in India, is more contagious and possibly less sensitive to the corona vaccines that are in circulation. The mutant turned up in recent days in a nursing home in Borsbeek near Antwerp, while all residents there had already been vaccinated. One of the residents succumbed. Samples brought to light another nineteen cases of the Indian variant on Sunday evening, Neyts says on the Belgian news channel Radio 1. "We can link half of them to trips to India, the other half not. That means that the variant is circulating...

Dozens Killed in Fighting Between the Indian and Chinese Armies

The border conflict between India and China has also cost human lives after more than a month. Soldiers from both countries are there at a great height face to face.   In those disputed regions, there are often conflicts between the two superpowers. According to India, there was no shooting, but soldiers from both camps have attacked each other with the fist, sticks or knives. At least three Indian soldiers, including an officer, were said to have been killed. There is no clarity about the number of victims on the Chinese side, according to some sources there would be five deaths. Both states have been involved in border disputes for decades, and things are going very hard every now and then. Each has its own story and accuses the other side of crossing borders.
