Canadians are No Longer Welcome in the European Union for the Time Being

Canadians are no longer welcome in the European Union for the time being. The member states have removed the North American country from the ‘white’ list of countries outside the EU that more or less have the coronavirus under control.

Tunisia and Georgia have also been removed from the list, while residents of Singapore can board a plane again to the EU. For the US, Russia, India, Brazil and Turkey, the ban on unnecessary trips will remain in place for the time being.

Residents from China, Macau and Hong Kong are welcome, but because of the so-called reciprocity principle only if EU citizens are also admitted.

The EU countries, except Ireland and the Schengen countries Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, closed their borders to travellers from outside the EU in mid-March due to the fight against the coronavirus. The list had not been revised for two months.

Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Rwanda, Uruguay, South Korea and Thailand remain on the list of safe countries.

The list is a recommendation. In principle, it is up to the countries themselves to decide who they let in, but partly because people can continue to other member states they want to draw the same line. Some Member States have stricter policies.
