British department store chain Debenhams is about to close its doors for good, with the corona crisis claiming its next victim in the UK retail sector.
Debenhams said no buyer had been found for the 232-year-old retail chain with approximately 12,000 employees.
Debenhams had talked about a sale with sports retailer JD Sports Fashion, but it has now withdrawn from those negotiations.
Debenhams has 124 department stores in the United Kingdom. A full or partial sale of the business is still considered.
On Monday it was announced that the British fashion concern Arcadia, known for its retail chains Topshop and Topman, is about to fall.
This puts 15,000 British jobs at risk. Most of Arcadia’s more than 500 stores are now closed due to the lockdown in England.
