BioNTech: Effect of Vaccine Against Variant Clear in Two Weeks

It will take about two weeks to determine whether the widely used vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech will work against the new strain of the coronavirus that has emerged in southern Africa.

That is what a spokesperson for the German company BioNTech said.

“We expect more data from the lab tests in two weeks at the latest,” explains BioNTech. These data can better clarify whether variant B.1.1.529 is a so-called escape variant. An escape variant is a version of the coronavirus that a vaccine does not work well against.

If B.1.1.529 is indeed such a variant, “the vaccine may need to be modified as the variant spreads around the world,” BioNTech said. This can be arranged fairly quickly, according to the company.
